Birgit Smith Burton is an inspiring and highly respected leader in the fundraising community, known for her passion, warmth, and exceptional accomplishments throughout her 33-year career. With more than $500 million raised, Birgit has truly made a lasting impact in the philanthropic world.

As Executive Director of Foundation Relations at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Birgit skillfully guided her team to raise an impressive $309 million toward Georgia Tech’s recent successful $1.8 billion capital campaign, significantly contributing to the institution's growth and success.

Birgit’s insights on fundraising and diversity are widely sought after, making her a compelling speaker and thought leader. She has authored influential articles on diversity within fundraising, co-authored "The Philanthropic Covenant with Black America," and contributed to "Five Minutes for Fundraising, A Collection of Expert Advice." Birgit also proudly shared her own personal story in the powerful collection "Collecting Courage," highlighting the experiences of Black professionals in philanthropy.

Selected by Georgia Tech leadership for the inaugural cohort of Leading Women @ Tech, Birgit has been recognized as a visionary leader shaping the institution’s future. In 2020, her unwavering commitment to inclusion and equity earned her recognition as one of Georgia Tech’s Faces of Inclusive Excellence.

Birgit is the immediate past global chair of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), notably making history as the first African American woman elected as chair-elect in AFP's 60-year history. She previously chaired AFP’s IDEA Committee (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access) and currently chairs the A.E. Lowe Grice Scholarship Fund. Birgit also contributes her expertise and leadership to the Hosea Helps board and serves as a trustee for her alma mater, Medaille College.

Additionally, Birgit founded the African American Development Officers Network (AADO), providing vital professional development, mentorship, networking, and employment support for fundraisers of color for over two decades. She is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and earned her bachelor’s degree in media communications from Medaille College in Buffalo, New York.

Through her leadership, warmth, and dedication, Birgit continues to inspire change, open doors, and elevate diversity and excellence within the philanthropic community.
