As CEO of Maia McGill Consulting, LLC, and Founder of the Inclusive Philanthropy Institute, Maia is deeply committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in fundraising and philanthropic practices.
Previously, Maia co-founded the groundbreaking Office of Inclusive Philanthropy at Florida International University (FIU) Foundation—the first initiative of its kind in the nation. Under her visionary leadership, this innovative office united development professionals and community leaders from diverse backgrounds to create philanthropic strategies that foster systemic change. Maia spearheaded targeted initiatives such as scholarships, comprehensive student support, enhanced faculty diversity, inclusive governance structures, social equity research, cultural competence training, and improved educational and health outcomes. She also intentionally built a diverse fundraising team reflective of FIU’s vibrant student community. By June 2023, Maia’s efforts had successfully raised more than $50 million to support university-wide diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.
Recognized for her thought leadership, Maia has shared her insights through the "Focus Forward Wisdom" series of Marts & Lundy’s "What We Think" podcast and has presented at numerous conferences, including the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Annual Conference for College and University Foundations and the African American Development Officers Network Conference on Diverse Philanthropy and Leadership. In February 2024, her impactful work earned her the prestigious CASE Opportunity and Inclusion Award for District III.
Before founding her consulting practice, Maia served as the Senior Executive Director for Foundation Relations at FIU, where she raised over $70 million during her six-year tenure. Prior to her role at FIU, Maia was the Director of Community and Multicultural Affairs at the University of Rochester Medical Center. There, she facilitated diversity-focused research initiatives and led community-based programs serving thousands of underserved residents. Maia also developed meaningful partnerships with foundations, healthcare providers, researchers, and community organizations, consistently driving impactful collaborations across public and private sectors.
Through her warmth, leadership, and unwavering commitment to inclusion, Maia continues to inspire transformative philanthropy that positively impacts communities and institutions nationwide.
